Pure new wool Great Kilt with optional accessories.

The Great Kilt was a near universal garment in the Highlands from the sixteenth century to the early part of the eighteenth (when the modern small kilt, the feileadh beag, was developed). Traditionally, the Great Kilt was simply a large piece of cloth, held together with a belt and folded in precise ways; intended as an all-weather all-in-one garment.

Can be supplied with a plain belt sporting a double-pronged brass buckle and/ or a large plaid brooch - can be chosen from the drop-down menus. These brooches have large brass pins to ensure they hold fast. Stone colour options include Ruby Red, Emerald Green, Sapphire Blue, Jet Black and Topaz Yellow. 

The Great Kilt can be made with 'cheater pleats' for you (as seen in the pictures above), although it can be left un-pleated if you like. The apron edge is fringed and belt loops are set at the appropriate length for your height. Again, these can be left off if you prefer. 

With 'cheater pleats' selected, you will receive a large pleated double-width cloth garment, with belt loops on the outer side. The width of the cloth will be divided into three, sized to your waist and seat measurements: the central portion will be the pleated part, then the two sides will form the inner and outer aprons. The former will be hemmed and the latter will be fringed, which will help you identify which side to fold first and second. First you'll slot the belt into the loops, then lay it out on the ground (the more space the better) and lie on top. Then, you'll fold over the inner apron, followed by the outer apron; belt firmly over the top, then you’ll be ready to stand up. The upper half will fall over the top. Then it’s a matter of arranging how you like. We provide a little booklet on how to wrap over the shoulder.

As with all our kilts, this garment is Made in Scotland by our own trained kilt makers. Each great kilt can take up to four weeks to dispatch for unpleated, and up to six for pleated. .

The Yardage of your kilt is determined by your seat measurement. We use between 4 and 6 yards depending on the sizes given.

Measuring advice:

  • Waist: measure firmly around waist at navel height. This helps us to position the aprons and belt loops.
  • Seat: measure around the largest part of the seat area. This helps us to know how wide to make the kilt cloth.
  • Kilt Length: measure from the top of the hip at navel height to the top or middle of the knee. As a rule of thumb, your kilt length should be no shorter than a third of your height. It's always best to get someone to help with this measurement, as you'll lean forward and shorten the length when doing it yourself. This measurement helps us to position the belt loops and pleats (if required)
  • Height: provide this in feet and inches. This lets us check whether the kilt length looks in proportion.
